Grants for Schools

Ask a Question
Grants for Schools

Schools in the UK are mainly funded through LEA funding. Schools are usually able to spend the majority of their funding as they see fit and as best meets their needs and those of the students.

Additional to this funding, however, there are a variety of grants available. These grants for schools are often for a specific purpose and they are offered by a wide range of organisations.

School grant applications will usually need to demonstrate that resources are not available within the school’s current funding.

What Can Schools Get Grants For?

Grants are available for schools so that they can develop and improve in various ways. For example:

  • Schools can apply for grants for equipment such as books, stationery and resources.
  • Grants are available for schools to stage events or organise trips.
  • Grant money is available to develop certain subject areas such as music, art or science.
  • Schools may apply for grants to develop, improve or expand their building, grounds and facilities.
  • Sports grants are available to promote exercise and sporting activities for young people.
  • Environmental school grants are on offer to promote the use of green technologies and renewable energy in schools.
  • ICT grants to develop schools’ IT resources.
  • Some grants provide money for childcare and health and social care facilities within schools.

Who Provides Grants for School?

Grants for schools are on offer from both large and small organisations. Some of the main school grants on offer are available from:

  • Lottery Funding – This includes funds from National Heritage, the Arts Council and the Sports Council.
  • European Funding – This includes funding from Structural Funds, Community Initiatives and Community Action Programmes.
  • Single Regeneration Budget – These funds are intended to support regeneration initiatives, for example schemes which create employment, develop skills or have a positive environmental impact.
  • Trust Funds – There are a number of UK trust funds which give out small or local awards to fund various school equipment and resource needs.
  • Private company and charity grants – A number of private and commercial companies and charities offer grants for schools. Examples are the Foyle Foundation and the Tree Council.

Some school grants are offered ‘in kind’ rather than through funding, for example in the form of land, buildings or capital.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Finding out about Grants for Schools

Finding out about grants for schools is not always easy. One way to find out about the latest grant opportunities is to compile a list of resources – places which annually or regularly offer school grants – and check them regularly. Use the sources listed above as a good starting point for your research.

Sign up to grants websites which provide alerts and regular newsletters on the latest funding opportunities.

There are sites such as the Grants4schools website which provide a central resource for school grant information. These sites do charge a fee but offer a centralised information resource which many schools find valuable. Searchable grant databases, calls for proposal alerts and deadline reminders can save schools time and money.

Information on trusts which offer school grants and funding opportunities is available from the Charities Aid Foundation Directory of Grant Making Trusts.

Am Nsamba Gerald a teacher by profession of Physics and Mathematics at High school. I have a passion of making my teaching different by Introducing a web based assessment platform that will bridge competent teachers. With such a platform each teacher creates an account and is able to feed the system with questions. The system is then designed in a such a way that it can randomly pick questions submitted by the teachers and generates a standard paper that can be got by learners after logging into their accounts. The system should be able to automatically mark the multiple choice questions for a given subject. It should also be able to accept uploads of scanned answers written by the students. These scanned images would be distributed to the teachers in the network to make the marking exercise very fast , Valid and reliable since teachers would be marking specific questions and the the system would be able to sum up the scores automatically.

Am looking for an organisation that i can partner with to share ideas and expertise to make the above project possible.

H.K Standard Education Academy(H.K SEA) IS a low cost private school which is based in Ndola Zambia. The school started in 2012 and has been in operation for 6 years now and it is registered.
From the tuition fee paid by the learners, the school has managed to build a one by three classrooms block and has roofed one classroom.
We aim to provide standard education to our learners.

The school is therefore seeking for interested people to invest in it so as to improve the lives of people through the provision of Standard Education.
Once the school is expanded to the standard desired, investors are promised a happy and ever smiling lives.
Interested people can come in person to Zambia and see what is being talked about for themselves.
The land is vast for expansion even to a level of a University.
Thanks for your time

Iam originally from Kericho in Kenya but reside in Norway. After many years staying in Norway, I thought of helping my community in Kenya.

I have started construction of classrooms now. I am almost completing four of them using my own monthly earnings.

I now resort to asking for help because there is still much to do, like toilets, computer and library room and laboratory room, teachers residences and other classrooms.

Iam looking for donors to help my community.

I look forward to hear from you. Whoever chooses to help is welcome to visit Kenya and see what we have done so far.

Please help us reach many willing donors.

Yours sincerely

Please can you help. I am looking for funding options for a new classroom for an academy school. The school was nearly shut down a few years ago to not enough pupils. But now it's at capacity and bursting at the seems. Currently we have a class of 30 taking lessons in any space that is free as they do not have a fixed classroom. The Council currently do not have the funds to help us develop this school

Hi, our son has been going to private school since reception and last year he moved to a secondary school, he is currently in year 8, we have always paid for the school fees, however, we are now facing financial difficulties and have approached the school regarding bursary, but have been told that we should have requested one when we applied for the school. We have been unable to pay the school since April this year and are desperately trying to resolve this issue in order to keep our son there.
My question is, is there any institution in the UK that offers school fee financial assistance for families like us that always paid for private education and because of the change in the circumstances are unable to carry on paying? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you and kind regards,

Hi. Anyone got any advice as to where to try for a grant to improve an outdoor learning space for children in reception classes. We have a tatty area which needs a big injection of cash to improve it and make it safe. We are a large primary school in Hastings. We support a high proportion of disadvantaged children and those with English as a second language. Our current space has proved invaluable in supporting their development. It has a dedicated full time member of staff who runs the outdoor space all year round. All weathers. However we desperately need to make changes in order to continue to make a difference
Austine 01/05/2016 at 10:38 am
Hi, I hope you are in the best of health when you receive this letter.
I'm a Kenyan male named Austine Odiwuor Muga (+254711890143) currently
residing in Eldoret, Rift Valley County. I did my KSCE examinations in
2009 and managed to attain a mean grade of B-(minus). Since finishing
high school, I have never managed to go to college owing to the fact
that my parents (my father passed away in 2005 mere months before I
sat for my KCPE) were/are financially unstable. Currently, my mother
bears the responsibility of taking care my younger siblings although
she strains significantly just to make ends meet. Throughout my life,
I have always dreamed of joining college because I believe it is the
sole avenue through which I can succeed and ultimately alleviate the
suffering my family has had to grapple with for far too long.
Unfortunately, finding willing individuals to sponsor one's education
continues to be a challenge in the nation. I have to admit that my
KSCE grades are not as impressive as those recorded by other top high
school graduates, but that is down to a number of crucial factors,
which may be difficult to capture in this letter. Nevertheless, if
need be, I am more than ready to explain why I failed to score highly
in my KSCE examinations. Following the completion of my secondary
education, I tried to seek various employment opportunities through
which I could raise some money to self-fund my college education. Once
again, such endeavors have been hampered by the scarcity of such of
opportunities and the meager pay offered in case one is lucky enough
to land them. In addition, with my mother carrying the burden of
taking care of my younger siblings, I always try to chip in
financially whenever possible as I believe I have grown enough to
contribute to familial responsibilities.
On a positive note, I managed to find a job that offers an average pay
by Kenyan standards in mid-March, 2016. It is not enough to cater for
my school needs given the fee charges in majority of the academic
institutions in the nation. I raise (on average ) 12,000 thousand
shillings a month, which is about 120 US dollars. Since then, I began
to set aside whatever amount I can to inject into my academic fees as
I have already registered to Kissii University, Eldoret branch, which
begins in early May, 2016. I decided to register for a Diploma course
in Community Development and Social Work (I do qualify for a degree
course) because I am certain I cannot afford a degree course given my
low earnings. Indeed, even the diploma fee is still high and may call
for extreme straining to be met, something that would inevitably lead
to a reduced focus on school work to meet the fee. I also wanted to
mention that I intend to attend classes on a part-time basis (on
weekends) to allow for time to raise some money. The university
charges 27 thousand shillings (roughly 270 US dollars) per semester
(four semester for the diploma course).

Hi

I am in need of a grant that will help e finish my course. Student finance refused to pay for my first year citing that i had already studied for two years in higher education. I tried to explain to them that the reason a one yer course took two years was because i had to do it part time as they had refused to fund me so i had to work and study for the course that would facilitate my going to University and study Computer Science.I am now in my final year of the course and yesterday i was told i could not continue if i did not pay at least £1000 by friday as i had not paid anything since august but trying to explain that my University schedule does not allow me enough time to work to be able to afford rent and tution fees of £300 a month did not help my case at all.I am in dire need of the initial £1000 so that i can continue with my studies which have five months only left to go

Hi. I am a TA in a special school. I am currently studying a degree to qualify in Supporting families and children with special needs. I see the support that families need on a daily basis. Imagine the support children would receive if there were consistencies and support in the home and school environment and how this would impact the children!
The head at my school has asked if I could look into funding for the school to offer Family support to the families and children of our school!
The impact of the cuts in our school budget means that the school isn't able to fund family support! Therefor I am trying to locate funding for this support to be funded! Looking forward to your reply!

Kind regards

I started a Nursery School in our community (rural) due to the fact that the children in this area could not access a nearby Nursery School. They would join Primary Schools without going through Nursery level.

The parents were so excited to have such a service in their locality, however, they are not able to meet the little money for fees which actually only caters for their teachers.

We need partners and support of any kind e.g putting up structures, scholastic materials, furniture, uniform. Please reach us on the above address.

Hi! I am a school head in a public elementary school in the Philippines. The school started its operation as complete elementary school in 2010 offering Kindergarten to Grade six but we still lack classrooms to accommodate three classes and an e-classroom for children's awareness on modern technologies as the school is located in a rural area. Hi, I am the new Facilities Manager of a Catholic School in Coventry (UK). I am new at this school and I am currently looking to improve and develop the school facilities, and I would like to get some info in how to apply for funding’s and grants to:
- Re-surface our Bus turning and playgrounds.
- To create a suitable car park, as currently staff is parking everywhere, on grass, paths, etc.
- Improve and repair the central heating to one of the school blocks, as some of the school areas have none or little heating.
- Re-glaze and insulate the refectory building, as present it’s still single glazed and metal framed windows possible from 1950’s and with no insulation.
- Roofing works are required, some roofs are leaking and have no insulation at all, making the rooms cold and inappropriate for activities.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

Generation Guiders 04/12/2014 at 3:33 pm
It is not a world title to host the largest slum in East and Central Africa (Kibera). It is not of fame to be a country that can’t feed its people. Neither is it of pride to be a people, who are so heartless, and won’t extend a helping hand to them that are in need in our society.
Many times the affected persons (and in most cases) are the children. It is they who suffer the adverse effects of any negative life patterns of the society. When marriages break up, it is the children who suffer. When internally displaced, due to civil wars, fire outbreaks, etc., the children suffer a great deal. When born and raised in indecent homes, they lose dignity. When they lack education, they live to be ignorant. Without proper medical care, they die prematurely. Taking care of a child is, indeed, taking care of the entire community.
We are appealing for your support .
Generation Guiders is a registered Community Based Organization in Nairobi Kenya registration number __KAS/CBO/5/4/2011/020.

The organization was foundered by two former street boys Eric Omondi and as a give back gesture to the community for having survived the tough time in slum dwelling street living and the eventual rescue and rehabilitation in children home.
We are looking for funds to support orphans and needy children Education in non- formal settlement.

Hi. I started a nursery school this year in my parents house, in a rural town in Uganda. My major objective was to make sure professionals stay in the rural place as they were previously running away when their children reached a school going age. There was no good school available. I have been overwhelmed with numbers as most parents want to bring children to my nursery school. I will not be able to keep the school at my parents house, i have been able to get a piece of land where to construct the real school. I would like a grant to help me build and equip the school. I currently have 50 children . Thank you

I'm an office manager in a small school in Northumberland. I would like to apply for the funding to re-surface our Nursery playground. The Nursery have been open for just over a year and although all staff worked hard to create stimulating environment (painting on walls, etc.) the playground is dull (concrete surface) and dangerous for 'little legs' (quite recently one of our children had to have her knee stitched to to severe cut after fall). I think the grant of £8,000 - £10,000 would allow us to invest in some playturf (soft surface), making any falls less dangerous. Thank you.

Please can you help me, I am looking for help with sending my boy to university, although he has applied to student finance for all the funds he can get, they will nor cover for the initial down payment on a room in London for his digs, I'm a single parent still supporting my sons twin brother who has already entered university but remains at home, and I did everything I could to help him to get in as I did with my eldest child. I've sold everything that I could to raise funds before now and have nothing left to sell.
I have been a single parent for fourteen years and want my last child to have the same chance as his brothers, he has an interview next week and as soon as he has a enrolment number we will have to find a living accommodation for him, do you know who could help, as I am going out of my mind with worry about no being able to find the funding and letting my son down with his chosen career. He is a gifted child and I want to give him the same ,please advise regards Juliesat

I am the Director General for Riki Development Initiators Association, working with the local community to build St. Monica International College-Riki in Arua district, West Nile region Uganda. This area was affected by the conflict that ravaged northern Uganda and it has no single secondary school which has greatly contributed to high illiteracy and poverty rate. The community has offered 25 acres of Land for the construction of a secondary school to address literacy issue but we do not have the funds. We would like to partner with any collaborator to construct four classrooms at a tune of U.S $ 52,000

Therefore may all of you of good will on this site support us please.

Peace of Christ be with you all!

I am the Vice Principal of a Catholic School here in the Philippines. The School where I worked is operated and managed by the Ursuline Sisters in od St. Jerome in Somasca. Our school will celebrate its Tenth Year next school year 2014-2015 and we are opening our high school department. Some good and kind-hearted individuals were generous enough to provide us with a school building for the high school department.
In this regard I am appealing to persons with a generous heart to help us with our science laboratories equipment.
We are planning to have classrooms devoted to science laboratories only and we are knocking in the hearts of generous people to help up put up the science laboratory.
We are very glad to discuss this with you in detail should you want to be the donor or sponsor of the said science laboratory.
Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Hi, I am the headmistress of primary school in the Northern Cape in South africa. My learners show a lot of skill in sports and some are academically challenged.I want to make these learners excell in the sporting talents they have. The school is situated in the deep rural area of the province. I really need to construct for them a sporting complex which will have athletic field, nice lawn to playboth soccer and to introduce rugby,a basketball, netball and tennis court. I believe some of them can successfully compete in olympics if motivated enough and having their skills sharpenned. The reality is that some of them especially boys end up dropping out of school after athletic period as they seem bored and frustrated by academic demands. I believe one way of keeping them at school and out of unruly behaviour is to seriously engage them in sport so that they can become better citizens of SA and the world.
I would be grateful to receive the funding that can assist me to assist the learners.
Thanking you in advance.

I am a 31 year old man from Zambia and staying in the capital city, Lusaka. I was given an admission at Lincoln University in USA for 2014, January to study business administration.

I am in need of 9000 dollars to use it for paying tuition fees, books accommodation and any other academic related expenses. Obtaining my first degree was a bit challenging due to financial constraints, but I managed to persevere by working so hard to pay the tuition fees in full.

At this level, I am asking for the financial assistance from the charity institutions. Any assistance rendered will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Am the coordinator of NGO, Buikwe Childcare Foundations, which give support to Orphans in terms of school fees, clothing, feeding and the later apply to widows and elderly. We base in Uganda where so many victims of HIV/AIDS are marginalized and are under the poverty line level. We have no enough funds to cater for 50 children so far under our care, identifying more, carrying out baseline survey. We need to our own school where we will educate these children. Any well wisher and sympathizer please contact the above emails.
thanks so much.

Hi! I am a retired corporate & marketing professional who has established with my wife, a retired educator, a mission school in a rural upland community in Indang, Cavite, Philippines. It's a small school whose aim is to help breach the intellectual and skills divide that separates rural students from their urban counterparts. We reach out to low-income rural families who normally find it difficult or impossible to send their children to private school. It is in this light that we offer extremely low school fees, just enough to fund a modest school operation. Results had been very encouraging since we started in 2009 as a tutorial center. Now we have 46 students from Preschool to Grade 4, with plans to offer classes up to Grade 6 as the years pass. We pray that someone out there with a big heart would help us build additional classrooms to accommodate more students next schoold year, as well as purchase Science and Computer facilities to help us bring the benefits of modern technology to these rural children. In all humility, we have a heart for service but our resources are limited. We could have opted to enjoy retirement in peace and by ourselves, but we chose to expend it in this advocacy. Our slogan: Quality Education need not be expensive. Please help.

hello, i am currenty a university student going into second year. i used to work as an AP in a radiotherapy dept a NHS hospital and did a foundation degree. late in 2009 was diagnosed of cancer and went on chemotherapy. after chemotherapy, was diagnosed of heart failure(dilated cardiomyopathy) had two strokes i a pace of 6 months and am still on treatment and on a heart transplant waiting list. i had an ICD implanted to assist my heart rhythm whilst waiting for the transplant.i had to leave my job due to the illness but later decided that i could study something that can make me be able to change my career path that is not too physical and straining.i applied for funding with SFE for my tuition and at first they gave me the entitlement surprisingly later this year after i had done my first year exams, they withdrew the funding and claimed back the fees for my first year which left me in debt to the university. i have tried to find out why but this is to no avail but they only tell me that its because i had previous study so they can only fund me in my second and third year. so if anyone could help me with any information of where i can funding , would be very grateful because right neither can i access my results nor even progress to second year because i owe that money. thanx in advance

Marburg Primary School has a role of 994 learners from mainly poor areas of Port Shepstone which is situated in Kwazulu Natal. We are presently in the process of startig the first phase for our construction of a school hall. The construction of the hall will assist us in providing a better education for our learners by generating income when hiring it out. The hall will also benefit the surrounding communities. We also intend to use it as an indoor sports facilitie. We urgently require about 250 000 pounds of funding to complete this project. Any amount of funding for this projecy will assist the community and he learners of our school

I am the school president of Aletheia Christian Academy of Ligao, Albay, Bicol Philippines. We have a school which we started 10 years ago serving the community in Ligao City. From a small number of 8 students we have now 250 students from Nursery to Grade 6. We are renting a small place about 400 sq.meter lot and there is not enough space for expansion while the rooms are also substandard because of the increasing population. Five years ago, a friend came and visit us and donated a1000 sq meter of lot near our place. But because we are running a class C and D community school, the low cost tuition fees is not enough to start a new building for the students We are looking for grants to help the students coming in for school next school year and we will be offering grade 7 next year as the parents of the students are expecting. Our school run as one of the best private school in the community. So with this, we need to build 12 classroom that would accommodate the students. We will be needing about $70,000 to start with. This will be a great start up fund as we move on to the next level of the school. Many thanks

Hi! am young lady from tanzania, i've always wanted to build a school in my country for the disadvantaged girls as the number of girls attending school n my country is very low due to low income of their parents and the wrong perseption among most parents in my region that educating girls is a wastage of money and their fate is marriage, I myself was among them but luckily for me a good samaritan offered to pay for my studies, I know alot of girls out here who wish to get atleast the secondary education but are being affected by the traditional beliefs and low incomes of their families so I want to start a project for school building where the girls can get their education the same way the boys do but to accomplish this I would need funds but unfortunately I come from a low income family so I was hoping you would help me on how to get the funds for the project, I know the project will change the lives of many girls who up to now have been denied the right to education,,thanks

I am a young Tanzanian, I am a teacher by profession. Me with my friend we have established a project of a school building in our area thruogh our own small income. So far we have done the following;
- We have bought the site of about 14 hector.
- We have afforded to pay for surveying cost and got a land ownership document from the government.
- We have got building permit from the governmet.
- We have built four classrooms and roofed them.

So by then we have failed to meet requiments in order to register our school, fro example we don't have administration building, laboratory rooms, and a meeting/digning hall.

We are looking on some one who in one way and another can either assist us in whatever a loan or grant us some amount of money of about $ 70,000. The purpose is to finish building and register the school so that we can qualify to be loaned by banks.

Please, may you support us for this?
Thanks in advance.

Hello i am a Drama Teacher at a Special Needs School in Kempston. I am trying to book a celebrity for the day, who can work with my drama group to enhance their learning. The students at my school have physical and learning disabilities and very rarely receive such a great opportunity! My students will be studying television and i thought this would be a great opportunity for them and to also help them in their exam.
However i am in great need of help to fund this event. The agency has lowered the price of an actor considerably to £1000 but i do need some more help. If there's any advice you can give me, that would be great! Thank you.
